SIM registration deadline may be extended

  • The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) is looking into possibly extending the April 26 SIM registration deadline.

"DICT has the prerogative to extend the SIM Registration process for another 120 days," DICT Usec. Anna Mae Lamentillo told reporters.

"We are still deliberating on the matter. [But] now, we're focused on increasing the number of registrants before the April 26 deadline," Lamentillo added.

DICT reminded the public to be cautious when registering their SIMs and use only the official links of telecommunication providers:

    - SMART - smart.com.ph/simreg or simreg.smart.com.ph

    - GLOBE - new.globe.com.ph/simreg

    - DITO - https://digital.dito.ph/pto/download/app

Earlier, DICT noted a "significant drop" in text scams following the implementation of the SIM Registration Act.

Under the law, old SIMs are required to be registered or they will be deactivated. New SIMs will also have to be registered to be activated.

As of March 7, Smart Communications Inc. has more than 21 million registered SIMs, while Globe and DITO Telecommunity Corp. have about 17.2 million and 3.1 million registered SIMs, respectively.
