Duterte to criminals: The clock is ticking away the hours from you
By NewsDesk on July 1, 2013 at 2:27 am
DAVAO City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte on Sunday declared all-out-war against criminals in the city, giving them little option as he pushed them away–to leave or to stop.
As he was sworn to office for the seventh time as mayor–underscoring that his government is for the least, the last and the lost–Duterte came out strong as he warned criminals, even children troublemakers, of the repercussions if they would choose to stay.
“I have said it before and I will say it again–criminals have no place in the city except in jails, detention centers and god forbid, in our funeral parlors should these criminals fight it out with our authorities,” he said.
“To drug pushers, drug dealers, drug suppliers and perpetrators of heinous crimes, I say again, say stop or leave. If you cannot or will not, otherwise you will regret it. Worse still, you may not survive your grief,” he added.
He said there will be no let up in “our fight against all forms of criminality” and as a “matter of policy, we will intensify our efforts in this campaign.”
“The clock is ticking away the hours from you. You can leave either vertically or horizontally. It is up to you. If you fight, the day ends permanently for you,” Duterte said.
He, too, has a message for children who are in conflict with the law.
“To the children who have made bloody fights and bloody riots nightly occurrences, do not waste away your lives,” he said.
He said erring children cannot for long find refuge from the Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act of 2006 because it is undergoing amendment now.
“Do not wait for that to happen. Mend your ways now. It will be for your own, and your family’s good,” he said.
In 2009, the Commission on Human Rights conducted a probe on the spate of killings in Davao City, while Duterte was the mayor. It particularly looked into the alleged operations of a vigilante group Davao Death Squad or DDS. The results of the CHR probe was never made public. |

NAIA-1 to be redesigned by Cobonpue for free
By Alma J. Buelva (MB Online)
Published: June 28, 2013
The plan for the NAIA 1 revolves around a green oasis in the heart of the city surrounded by several road rings flanked by a multi-level parking building and a greeters’ terminal.
The much-awaited rehabilitation of NAIA Terminal 1 is finally pushing through with multi-awarded Kenneth Cobonpue to do its interiors “pro bono”.
Secretary Jun Abaya of the DOTC (Department of Transportation and Communications) announced that it is moving forward with the P2.8 billion rehabilitation of NAIA terminal 1 with plans to bid out by next month contracts to address structural and architectural components.
Targeted for completion in time for the hosting of the APEC Summit in 2015, the design complements the original exterior which, due to national patrimony laws, cannot be altered.
In a meeting held in the DOTC office on May 10, 2013, five cabinet secretaries chose to adapt the original design of Cobonpue, Budji Layug and Arch. Royal Pineda. The trio will work with the architectural firm of Leandro V Locsin who designed the present NAIA terminal.
Shelved in 2011, the original plan revolves around a green oasis in the heart of the city surrounded by several road rings flanked by a multi-level parking building and a greeters’ terminal. Abaya said that the trio would put a “Filipino taste and modern feel” to the planned rehabilitation, with Sec. Jimenez saying that the “aha feel” in the proposed design was what they were looking for.
Based on data from the Center for Aviation (CAPA), NAIA was the 34th busiest airport in the world last year, having served about 830,000 passengers per week. In October last year, NAIA also bagged the title world’s worst airport to sleep in overnight due to bad facilities, based on an online survey conducted by the website sleepinginairports.net.
Cobonpue is a world-renowned furniture designer and manufacturer from Cebu who graduated in Industrial Design from Pratt Institute in New York with highest honors and subsequently worked in Italy and Germany. His products that use locally sourced materials have been sold to the rich and famous that include Hollywood celebrities like Brad Pitt and members of royalty.
Awards to his credit include 5 Japan Good Design Awards, the grand prize at the Singapore International Design Competition, the Design for Asia Award of Hongkong, the American Society of Interior Design Top Pick selection and the French Coup de Coeur award.
In 2007, TIME magazine called Cobonpue "rattan’s first virtuoso".

http://www.malaya.com.ph/index…ces-to-regain-lost-ground
Lieber Herr Investor,
was willst du uns jetzt eigendlich sagen?

Did Bourne Legacy help or hurt PH tourism?
by Cathy Rose A. Garcia, ABS-CBNnews.com

CEBU, Philippines - Filipinos took enormous amount of pride in the fact that Hollywood film "The Bourne Legacy" was filmed in parts of Metro Manila and Palawan.
But a branding strategist from Singapore believes the film hurt the Philippines' image as a tourist destination.
In a recent interview with ABS-CBNnews.com, Lexis Branding CEO Jacqueline Thng said the Department of Tourism should not have allowed the film to shoot in the country.
"Bourne Legacy, which showed the slums of the country, that's not the face of Philippines. Yet that was probably the biggest advertising campaign the DOT approved... That's a major global film and yet it showcased the Philippines at its worst state. Is that fun? That's not fun," she said, referring to the DOT's "It's More Fun in the Philippines" campaign.
"The Bourne Legacy," which starred Jeremy Renner and Rachel Weisz, was shot in the gritty streets of Manila, Marikina market and Navotas fish port.
Director Tony Gilroy had said they chose Manila since it "felt so Bourne-ish." "It's just so colorful and ugly and gritty, raw and stinky and crowded," he said.
While the Bourne film showed a side of Manila that may be realistic, Thng said it should not have been highlighted.
"It showed a portion of the Philippines that you do not want to show to the world. I know it's real but it's something you're trying to eradicate. Is that a good representation of Manila? No. You go to Manila, sure there are pockets of this there but it's not how the Philippines is. By putting it on an international film, that's one of the biggest advertising campaigns out there. It beats all of the It's More Fun in the Philippines ads... People believe it's really because it's in the movies," she said.
The Manila scenes in Bourne Legacy may stick in the minds of moviegoers around the world. Thng said tourism officials should be very mindful of how the Philippines' image is being shown around the world.
"You can spend all these millions of dollars promoting how beautiful the Philippines is, and it's true, it really is beautiful but suddenly, people get to see this portion of the slums of the Philippines. It's like showing the same slums people see in India, that make people avoid going to India. I would say you have to be very careful of how the country's image. Every portion matters," she said.
Korea's example
Thng said the Philippines should take note of South Korea's successful campaign, which incorporates K-pop, and K-dramas with tourism.
"They used their entertainment as a means to promote the country. And there's no reason why you can't do that. If you look at the Korean dramas, they're really promoting their culture, places and as a result people are all flocking to Korea," she said.
"The stars of Kpop are now all over the world. The truth is, can Koreans sing better than Filipinos? The answer is no, Filipinos can singer better. But can they market themselves better, yes, they're great in marketing."
The DOT should consider using Filipino celebrities and teleseryes to promote tourism in the country.
"If the government wants to make an effort to promote tourism, they can tap the entertainment industry. Use that because it's an easier way to get into the hearts of the people...(DOT) can collaborate with the network and create a teleserye that promotes beautiful places in the Philippines," Thng added.
Ps.
